Reception
Main Aims
At Sunninghill we aim to provide the highest quality care and education for our Reception children within a safe, happy and nurturing environment. Through a child-centred approach our dedicated team of teachers and support staff help each pupil achieve their best and foster a life-long love of learning.
At the heart of what we do is our pastoral care and from the very start of a child’s school journey we encourage the development of social and emotional skills, so that each child is happy and confident, with a positive sense of self and the ability to form friendships that will remain throughout their time at Sunninghill.
The Curriculum
In Reception your child will embrace and direct their learning through a combination of play-based and adult supported learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum provides children with the skills necessary to have the best possible start in life. In order for children to thrive the curriculum focuses on the three prime areas of communication and language, physical development and personal and emotional development. Alongside these areas are four specific areas, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design which ignites children’s curiosity and enthusiasm.
A Learning Journey to be Shared
In Reception each child is valued with our experienced staff planning exciting topics and activities based around the children’s individual interests, making learning meaningful, fun and purposeful. Staff encourage awe and wonder through child-initiated play in our ‘Let’s Explore’ sessions, where there is a strong focus on discovery, creativity, problem solving and working with others.
Within each day the children take part in phonic and literacy sessions with a focus on developing their early reading, writing and language skills and mathematics sessions to develop their early numeracy skills. Our Reception children also receive specialist teaching for French, music, PE and gardening, with the opportunity to take part in weekly tennis and dance lessons if they choose.
